Echomix is made by the Katzenpost Project
Echomix is the next step in the evolution of Katzenpost, the world’s first post-quantum mix network. Katzenpost is a free and open-source software project advancing anonymous communication through powerful, realistic threat models and rigorous security goals.
Aiming to resist realistic modern adversaries
Tor and VPNs are great tools in their own domain, and for teir stated theat models, but they are an elegant weapon for a more civilised age. A surveillance adversary, such as a government agency or a big tech corporation, that can see both ends of a connection can still easily match them. Add to that a collection of confirmation and correlation attacks that have been used to de-anonymize Tor and VPN users in practice, and anyone serious about their safety online may start looking for something stronger. That’s where Echomix steps in.
Made by a team of pedantic, paranoid hackers who will always choose security over the easy way, this tool aims to give an observer nothing it can feasibly protect.
EchoMix Politics and Values
Surveillance is an instrument of power. It is part of an apparatus of control. While the violent conflicts, the corrupt economic systems and climate catastrophe are direct problems, surveillance and every day control is an obstacle to us finding solutions. It is having profound effects on our social structure and solidifying destructive power systems worldwide. “If information is power, then privacy is freedom.”
While surveillance is nothing new, technological changes have given governments and corporations an unprecedented ability to monitor everyone’s lives. Surveilling us has become cheaper than figuring out whom to surveil. Governmental surveillance is strongly linked to totalitarian control and digital warfare. Security vulnerabilities that enable one enable all. Surveillance is also strongly linked to conventional warfare. As Gen. Michael Hayden has explained, “we kill people based on metadata”; and to make a terrible thing even worse, in the age of AI, metadata-driven drone warfare is being conducted without meaningful human supervision .
